Mt. Sterling

Welcome to Mt. Sterling, Ohio! Though we don’t have a mountain as our name says, we do have some of the most scenic countryside in Madison County as you enter the rolling hills of the Deer Creek State Park region.

Mt. Sterling was one of the earliest settlements in the county because its location was close to the settled counties of Fayette, Pickaway and Franklin.

James and William Hewey and David Martin first settled Pleasant Township and built cabins on the banks of Deer Creek in 1797, five years before Ohio became a state. Later, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky resident John J. Smith purchased the land on which the village now stands.

In 1828, Smith surveyed and mapped the town and named it after his hometown of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. The town was platted on June 26, 1829. Later, the town was incorporated on March 12, 1845.

Mt. Sterling is home to Republican U.S. Senator John William Bricker who served from 1947 to 1959.
